Fireproofing 2017-11-21T11:51:30+00:00

When a structural fire occurs, it is not a question of whether a fire can damage the structure, but a question of when.  It simply takes longer for fire to affect fire-resistant materials.  Fireproofing is legally mandated by the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), the Department of Buildings, the Health Department and most insurance companies.  However, it is not a task to be done only because the code requires it, but more importantly for the protection of property and the value of human life itself.

Fireproofing is the application of specialized chemical compounds, known as fire retardants, to surfaces that are otherwise flammable.  The chemical compound of the fire retardant will reduce the material’s likelihood of combusting, preventing the spread of an existing fire and a new one from starting.  Fireproofing can be reasonably incorporated into a budget and is cheaper when compared to the cost of fire damage.

NY Insulate specializes in two types of fireproofing:

Spray-applied Fire Resistive Material (SFRM) is the most common way to provide fireproofing protection because this method is quick, highly effective and inexpensive.  SFRM is a cementitious mixture that is uniformly applied directly onto steel surfaces via a high-pressured spraying process.  It is an excellent choice for concealed environments and where a more durable fireproofing is required.  SFRM has a rating of up to four (4) hours for assemblies, beams, joists, columns, and walls and partitions.  If SFRM has been damaged or removed, it may be repaired by spraying or hand troweling freshly mixed product to the affected areas.

paint

Intumescent Paint is a paint like coating that expands and chars in a fire providing superior fire resistivity.  It is spray-applied to steel in layers, creating a buffer between the flames and the steel members for a fire rating of up to four (4) hours.  This product is a great solution when aesthetics come into place and steel is exposed to the public.  A final layer of the paint is mixed with pigments to provide the desired color, giving you structural steel that is decorative and aesthetically pleasing.  Intumescent Paint is capable of withstanding weather elements and a wide range of temperatures, making it appropriate for use in both interior and exterior locations such as hospitals, schools, transit stations and shopping centers.
